GODFATHER "D" true story of DJ Godfather D with a bunch of a.k.a.'s. No bullshit, no lies so here we go: D was born in Switzerland in a city called Lausanne back in 1974 year of the TIGER. He was always connected to music. Since 1st grade, he was transferred to a special elementary school that would have a 60% academic and 40% music program. His parents could testify that music has always been part of his life. Instead of giving toys children would usually request for Christmas and birthdays, they were given a list of records to buy. Records goings from rock, disco, jazz and punk just to name a few D was listening to all type of music. It all soon changed when he was first introduced to the hip-hop culture for the first time back in 1983. Older cousins and friends from Queens and Brooklyn exposed him to break dancing, fresh gear and rap. Everything he would learn down in New-York, he would bring back to MTL. This is why he was influenced early on to the sound of old school hip-hop icons such as Kool DJ Red Alert, Mr Magic and Marley Marl. In the year of 1987, after stacking up enough records with his lunch money, Godfather D was born. Entertaining people in high school parties and slowly elevated in doing gigs in small clubs, Godfather D's career was taking shape. The club scene in MTL was a major influence in Godfather's style. As the years went by and hip-hop becoming more and more mainstream, D felt like all the clubs in MTL just sound the same. According to D, around 1989 and 1990 there was a drop in quality hip-hop music. This crisis led to the emergence of house music that gave birth to D's alter ego better known as Don Barbarino in 1991. Don Barbarino is the name that D is using when he plays house music and Godfather D is representing hip-hop. Godfather was a nickname that was given to him from his entourage. Wilding out in the streets of MTL doing dumb things, he decided to use this name with music in a more positive way. Don Barbarino was just a natural connection in reference to the Movie "The Godfather" played by Marlon Brando who was playing as Don Carleone. D decided to go with Barbarino, a name he snatch from his best sitcom television show called "Weclome Back Kotter". Godfather
came back from a football scholarship in the States in 1996 and quickly
replaced the hobby of killing quarterbacks to killing crowds with phat
beats. In 1997, he became a resident DJ at the Lounge called "Luba"
where he gave birth at his legendary evening called "Chillincypherizm".
This evening is gathering real hip-hop heads worldwide down with the old
school, new school and all school. Godfather wanted to make sure that
"Chillincypherizm" would only concentrate on hip-hop and R&B
to differ from the already established format in the nightlife of MTL.
He has played as guest DJ in mostly all the major clubs in MTL dealing
with hip-hop and house music. D also had residency at the well-known after
hour called "Sona" for less than a year before it was shut down.
He played with the best DJ's in town such as Kwite Sane, Smokey, Dr One,
Jojo Flores, Uzi, Soul Player, Tony Desypris and DJ Sinister just to name
a few. Godfather was the first to ever win the MUC title (Montreal Underground
Championship battle of the DJ's). He also was a pioneer in the mixtape
circuit to mix Montreal talent with hip-hop coming from the States. He
was in a group called "CYNICS" that helped him get notoriety
with his mixtapes in the early 90's. It's plain and simple, Godfather
D feels like he is the underdog. Lots of DJ's decide to jump ship and
play the top 40 to secure their jobs. He doesn't have to do that because
that's not why he is doing this
it's 4 da luv & the culture!!! |
